Sculpt: Smooth Directional (from the Sculpt Dev branch)

The sculpt dev branch is a branch that developers used to test and develop new sculpting features. Unfortunately, the branch is not in active development anymore, but it still has some very useful features that didn't made it to the main Blender version... so it would be great if they were ported to the main Blender...

One of the features is:

Smooth brush's Directional deformation type

In the main Blender version, the Smooth brush has two deformation types (Laplacian and Surface)... In the branch there are couple more, and one very useful is the Directional:

It smooths the surface taking into account the direction of the stroke... Quite popular in other sculpting apps.. 😉

It's easier to see the effect on a bumpy surface:

Interesting surface effects can be achieved with this smoothing algorithm... 👌

Other features available in the Sculpt Dev branch:

100%

This seems relatively easy to re-implement, though I have a few user-level questions about this before writing up a good first issue for it / discussing this further at a module meeting.

  • Is the summary of the user-level motivation that this is a smooth brush that allows preserving crease-like deformations on the surface?
  • The current implementation of the brush hardcodes a specific angle cutoff when determining neighbors to use for sampling, is this something that you find useful to customize?

Not really sure about the crease-like deformations 🤔 but yeah, smoothing along the stroke direction allow us to smooth without losing a lot of the surface detail... So I guess it's something along those lines, yeah...

Hm, I'm not familiar with that parameter (other apps don't offer that)... so I guess we would need to try to see how useful that would be...

I'm going to link the commit that introduced it here so I don't have to dig around to find it again in the p.b.o website: projects.blender.org/blender/blender/commit/f4900b3d02cb1d30f5218257d6968a52225c14f8

Is it possible to download a Blender version that contains this feature? I wanted to submit the idea of this brush, but you already created a topic for it. It is very useful brush, probably the only feature I miss from ZBrush, it is very needed in Blender sculpting mode
